I don’t know if we are in a recession or not.

And frankly, I don’t really think about it much.

But I know a lot of other people do.

Particularly because the media loves to talk about problems. And recession talk has been lively problem in the "news" lately.

Here’s an interesting fact I want to share with you.

During the Great Depression of the 1930s, when things were at there worst with thousands of people out of work, homeless people living in tent cities, and soup lines in major cities, can you guess how many people were still employed?

About 75%.

That’s right the vast majority of all people were still employed.

And that proves to me that if you are smart, you can live through tough times.

Now I’m not saying we’re heading for a depression, or even a recession, because like everyone else on this planet I don’t know what will happen in the future.

I do know that some businesses are having a tough time, and are cutting back spending. But again most of the media reports you watch, hear or read aren’t that helpful on this matter.
 
You see the media mostly tells you what large businesses are doing and gives you macro government stats about what the economy is doing as a whole.

But how useful is that info to you personally in your business or sales turf?

I mean hey, I studied econ, accounting, engineering and business operations in college, so I do understand this stuff. But when I hear that durable goods orders are up or down for example, that doesn’t tell me squat about what is happening in or what will happen to my business.

All this stuff does is get people worried and scared (which BTW, gets you hooked into turning the news back on again tomorrow).

So there is one thing you must do to handle a downturn.

Get focused.

Get focused on why customers do actually buy from you, and get focused on the best, most likely prospects.

The past 5 years have been great and maybe – maybe – the next couple might be a bit harder.

But then again, they might be better. Because not you, nor I, nor the news media know.

And how you think about what will happen to you has a big effect on what actually does happen to you.

So get focused. Get clarity on why people buy from you. Get sharper at communicating that to you prospects. Get faster at motivating those people to want to do something about the problems they have that they can solve by buying from you.
