Some of the best sales people I know do not "conform to the norm".
This one friend of mine flies around the country, schmoozing and rubbin elbows with Hollywood types and behind the scenes munney big shots talking bout advertising, and – get this – he drinks milk when he goes to the bar.
While wearing a cowboy hat.
But he still pulls down some major cashola every year – we’re talking millyuns of buckaroos every year.
Some people think that there certain ways that you gotta do things.
Ways that things just gotta be done.
Or else you’re "wrong".
These ways are called rules for some people.
Rules that unfortunately get some people tied all up in knots.
I laughed out loud yesterday when I read through my email, and found this gem from someone who decided after getting my emails for over a year, that she didn’t love me anymore…
I find your emails unnerving and gross, and with a degree in marketing, I wonder why you bother to bombard people with your newsletter. It is a technique which indicates an extreme lack of subtlety and consideration for the customer.
Subtle? Not me.
Degrees? Well I studied engineering.
So I guess after today I am just going to have to close up shop now that this holder of a marketing degree has told me what I am doing wrong.
The truth is folks if you follow the rules, if you do what everyone else is doing, then you just blend in and get lost in the crowd.
It’s much more important that you connect with people on a real personal, emotional level.
Much more important than doing things the "right way".
